Mission Control: Unlocking Your True North

Use this simple 10-minute coaching exercise to define your personal mission, cut through noise, and make aligned decisions.

One of the first exercises I tend to share with clients (who are interested in exercises) is the question: What is your mission? I normally ask a willing client to follow this initial exercise shown below, then spend at least a few weeks in thought and reflection – making tweaks. It took me nearly two months to land with something that was close to a good fit for me, and this can be quite an iterative exercise and evolving answer.

Before long, without a mission we find ourselves running full speed on a treadmill, only to realize it isn’t even facing the right direction.

True high performance isn't just about moving faster—it’s about knowing why you are moving at all.

When you don’t have a clearly defined mission, every decision feels heavy. Small distractions look like massive opportunities, and burnout creeps in because you’re expending energy on things that don't actually matter to your core.

A powerful personal mission cuts through the noise. It serves as your internal compass, helping you make high-stakes decisions with absolute clarity and ease.

The Exercise: What Is Your Mission?

Take out a blank sheet of paper, set a timer for 10 minutes, and write your answers to the following prompts without overthinking:

  1. The Peak Moments: When do you feel most fully alive, energized, and deeply in your element? What are you doing, and who is benefiting?
  2. The Core Contribution: If you could leave people better, clearer, or more empowered in a very specific way by the time your journey is done, what would that look like?
  3. The Anti-Mission: What are you no longer willing to tolerate or spend your finite energy on? (Often, defining what you stand against clarifies what you stand for.)
  4. The One-Sentence Draft: Distill your thoughts into a single, punchy sentence starting with: "My mission is to..."

Don't worry about making it sound poetic. It doesn't need to impress anyone. It just needs to resonate deep in your chest and make you want to take action tomorrow morning.

Once you have your draft, put it somewhere you’ll see it every day. Use it as a filter for your calendar, your commitments, and your goals.

What is your mission? Let’s make sure your daily actions finally match your ultimate destination.
